In the relentless pursuit of success, many of us often prioritize our busy lives over proper meals. Those who subscribe to the "time is money" philosophy tend to overlook the significance of a well-balanced diet. However, it's important to recognize that proper nutrition is the cornerstone of a healthy body, and a sound mind thrives in a sound body.
A common practice among most of us is to multitask during meals, whether it's reading a newspaper, flipping through a magazine, watching television, dictating business letters, or engaging in casual conversations.
According to Ayurveda, this behavior is considered disrespectful toward our food and, by extension, our digestion. Such habits can lead to issues like indigestion, depression, hyperacidity, loss of appetite, and the discomfort of stomach gases.
When we engage in other activities while eating, we tend to rush through our meals, unintentionally swallowing air along with our food. This can result in stomach gas, with most of the gas in the stomach and about half of the gas in the intestines originating from swallowed air.
Sometimes, this ingested air can move upward and exert pressure on the diaphragm, leading to feelings of breathlessness, restlessness, and chest heaviness.
Moreover, the combination of swallowed air and partially chewed food disrupts the balance of pachak pitta, saman vata, and kledak kafa, which are essential for the smooth functioning of the digestive system. When these doshas are disturbed, digestion is compromised, and excessive production of ama or toxins occurs.
Ama is believed to be a primary cause of numerous diseases, as Ayurveda suggests that wherever there is a disease, ama is present. Poor eating habits are often the initial trigger in the production of ama, and its subsequent elimination can be a costly affair.
Stay focussed, stay healthy and be blessed
